PARETO PRINCIPLE

HOW TO APPLY THE PARETO PRINCIPLE TO YOUR MARKETING

PAY ATTENTION TO THE VITAL FEW &          IGNORE THE TRIVIAL MANY

Because there is a LOT of NOISE in the marketing world, I think it's more important than ever to undestand where to spend your limited amount of time working on marketing.  If you are unfamiliar with the Pareto Principle, check out this short primer.  Just as the Pareto Principle states, some tactics and efforts will result in much higher returns and desired outcomes. The 20% of actions that generate 80% of outcomes are often referred to as the "vital few."  Do more of these things and your results will be more favorable.  These activites are worth your investment of time.  The 80% of actions that generate a measly 20% of outcomes are referred to as the "trivial many."  Stop doing these things or get somebody else to do them for you.  They should not occupy your precious time.  While there are a couple of authors who have written some noteworthy books about the Pareto Principle (particularly, Richard Koch's The 80/20 Principle & Perry Marshall's 80 / 20  Sales And Marketing), I feel that there is still a gap in applying this very powerful idea to small and local businesses.  I'd like to change that.

NOTE: This is a relatively new subject for me and I have yet to write extensively about it:
